Airside director Fred Deakin recently removed the design hat from his dome in order to don a very snazzy music Montera and write a new tune for a video game. Chime is an experimental mix of music and puzzles, which combines elements from various games and integrates them with the accompanying ambient music.
The music – also featuring contributions from Moby, Philip Glass and Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll – changes and expands as you progress through a level, while the beats serve as a timer. Fred’s track goes by the brilliant title of Disco Ghosts, and is a wonderfully atmospheric piece featuring smooth beats and lush electronics.

Given this blog’s complete incompetence when it comes to shapes (get in that round hole, you blasted square ball!), we can’t tell you if  the game is any good, but our resident games expert, Chris Rain, has given it the thumbs-up. Though that might have been a thumbs-down – we can’t really tell as his digits have been crippled beyond recognition from too much game play.
Chime is released by OneBigGame, a charitable organisation that creates video games to raise money for children in need. 60% of the game’s purchase price will be donated to the charity’s fund. Chime is available now on Xbox and PC.

Our new Airplot t-shirt was recently spotted at its spiritual home. The photos below show both t-shirts, as modelled by Greenpeace’s finest, at the Airplot site itself. Airplot is a small piece of land that sits in the middle of the proposed site for Heathrow Airport’s third runway.
You can back the campaign to stop airport expansion by signing up to be a beneficial owner of the land. And now you can show your support with the official Airplot Campaign t-shirt, exclusively available from Airside Shop. For every t-shirts sold, £2 of the price will go to Greenpeace.

Airside have once again teamed up with Greenpeace – this time on their campaign for justice for the Tokyo Two. The Tokyo Two are Japanese Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki. In 2008 they uncovered evidence that a Japanese whaling ship, Nisshin Maru, hunting whales in the Southern Ocean sanctuary under the guise of scientific research, was being used to illegally supply the whale meat market.
After Greenpeace presented their findings at a press conference and the District Prosecutor agreed to investigate the case, the case was suddenly dropped and Greenpeace’s Tokyo offices raided by police. Junichi and Toru were arrested and held for intense daily interrogation. After almost a month they were released on bail where they await trial to face charges of whale meat theft and trespassing. If convicted they could face up to 10 years in prison.

Along with Amnesty International, Greenpeace believe that the case against the Tokyo Two is politically motivated and are demanding that the case be dropped.
To help their cause Airside created a Manga-style comic strip telling their story for a flyer campaign. You can see a digital version here.

Our illustrations were also used at a recent protest held outside the Japanese Embassy in London, where Greenpeace supporters, including rock star Bryan Adams, coloured in a placard-size version of the flyer.

When the Galapagos Conservation Trust asked Airside to produce a set of postcards featuring Boobies, we started thinking about those saucy 1930’s postcards.

But then we realised they were talking about the Blue-Footed Booby – a native of the Galapagos Islands.

Cards_blog.jpg

As part of a campaign to help preserve the unique, native species of the Pacific Ocean UNESCO World Heritage site, the Galapagos Conservation Trust wanted to introduce the islands’ animals to children. They set up the Tortoise Club and asked Airside to create a set of postcards, stickers and badges to be given free to schools.

Ok so our take on the Blue-Footed Booby, Marine Iguana, Galapagos Sea Lion, Penguin, Giant Tortoise and Sally Lightfoot Crab might not be exactly biologically accurate, but they sure are cute. And somewhat more educational than a Carry-On style cartoon.

This is Torsten and Catdog. They’re going to be setting up camp at Greenpeace’s allotment, quietly protesting against the runway expansion (see Jamie’s previous Airplot blog posting for details).
