Destroy / Rankin

The Brief
Children’s music charity, Youth Music commissioned Airside to design and build a mini-site for their 10th anniversary fund-raising project. Destroy involved some of the world’s leading musicians creating artwork based on prints by the renowned photographer, Rankin, which were then exhibited for auction and collected in a coffee table book. The brief for the mini-site was to showcase the artwork and promote the book and auction, whilst reaching out to a new audience. Our Solution
Airside’s main concern was to showcase the Destroy artwork in an interesting and exciting way. As each piece actually consisted of two images – the original Rankin photograph and the image destroyed by the musicians – we decided to cross-fade the corresponding images. We used a freely available Javascript framework called jQuery, instead of Flash, which meant the site wouldn’t suffer in terms of search engine optimisation – an important factor in reaching new audiences. The mini-site homepage features audio-visual content provided by Rankin and also focuses on Destroy’s social network tools, displaying Twitter feeds and an event diary. However in order not to detract focus from the gallery of artwork, the homepage is an easily closable overlay to the main website.
Airside also created visuals for the Destroy charity auction party, held at Phillips dePury in London. The event featured a live performance by Jarvis Cocker and DJ support from our own Fred Deakin.
