Nokia launched viNe - a new application for their N-Series mobile phones. viNe has a feature called “geo-tagging”, which enables users to tag music played and photos taken on the phone to a specific geographic location using GPS tracking. Users could then upload this information to a dedicated site and share their journeys with the world.

The open brief from agency R/GA was to create a short animation for the Nokia website explaining the concept to a non-technical audience. The film would also need to illustrate how the technology could be used in day-to-day life in an engaging and entertaining way.

In the brief R/GA had referenced previous information films we had made for Fiat and Greenpeace, so we knew that the film should tell a story. After outlining some narrative concepts and drafting a script, we started creating characters and the environment.

The tone of the piece was important, as it had to appeal to a general audience but without patronising the more technically savvy Nokia customers. Working closely with the creative team at R/GA, the scripts were constantly revised and the designs reworked until it was ready to be animated.

Working with Airside on the Nokia viNe project was a dream. Right from the start, their thinking and willingness to collaborate was outstanding. Airside brought a whole new dimension to the project, above and beyond the execution. Their writing and visual expertise gave personality and charm to a very technical product – making it easy for pretty much anyone to digest.

And on top of that, their enthusiasm and quality is boundless.
